Robredo leads Swedish Open winners

BASTAD, Sweden, July 15 (UPI) -- Reigning champion Tommy Robredo led Wednesday's winners at the Swedish Open tennis tournament in Bastad, Sweden.

Robredo, the No. 3 seed and only player in the 28-man field ever to have won this event, beat unheralded Peter Luczak 6-2, 6-3 in a second-round match. He next faces Teimuraz Gabashvili in the quarterfinals Friday.

Gabashvili was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Bjorn Phau.

In other matches Wednesday, fifth-seeded Nicolas Almagro downed Marat Safin 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), and Daniel Gimeno-Traver topped Frederico Gil 6-1, 6-4.

The tournament's top-four seeds all received byes into the second round, leaving No. 1 seed Fernando Verdasco to begin his Bastad campaign Thursday against Daniel Koellerer.
