Monaco beats Gonzalez at Swedish Open

BASTAD, Sweden, July 14 (UPI) -- Gritty Argentine Juan Monaco defeated eighth-seeded countryman Maximo Gonzalez Tuesday in first-round action at the Swedish Open.

Monaco beat Gonzalez in three sets 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-1.

Meanwhile, Argentine qualifier Guillermo Canas defeated Bulgarian wild card Grigor Dmitrov 6-3, 7-6 (7-2); Italian qualifier Potito Starace beat Frenchman Julien Benneteau 7-6 (7-5), 6-3; and Belgian Kristof Vliegen eliminated Spaniard Marcel Granollers 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

This week's top seeds are Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, Sweden's Robin Soderling and reigning champion Tommy Robredo of Spain. Robredo defeated Czech Tomas Berdych in last year's finals and also won this event in 2006.
