ST. LOUIS, July 14 (UPI) -- The defending champion Philadelphia Phillies have signed three-time Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez to a one-year contract, sources told MLB.com Tuesday.

One source told the baseball Web site the Phillies will announce the signing of a $1 million deal with $1.5 million in incentives Wednesday. Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. declined comment, MLB.com said.

The 37-year-old right-hander passed a physical Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Martinez, unaffiliated since having his worst season at the major-league level in 2008, is expected to help a pitching staff that ranks 14th in the National League in earned-run average (4.61) at the All-Star break.

Martinez had an injury-filled, four-year stay with the New York Mets. In 2008, the 17-year veteran had a career-worst 5.61 ERA and a 5-6 record in 20 starts.

The Phillies, in first place in the NL East, have been looking for a replacement since Opening Day starter Brett Myers had surgery on his right hip in June.

Martinez has a 2.91 ERA and 3,1117 strikeouts in 467 career games -- 400 starts. His 214-99 record ranks fifth on the active list in wins.
