LONDON, July 14 (UPI) -- Former Ryder Cup Captain Bernard Gallacher says the dispute over supposed cheating between Sandy Lyle and Colin Montgomerie should be put behind them.

Lyle said recently that Montgomerie, the captain of the 2010 European team, had for all practical purposes cheated when he made a bad drop after a rain delay at the Indonesian Open four years ago.

The Times of London Online said Tuesday that while Montgomerie was cleared of wrongdoing by tournament officials, the funky drop raised the ire of other golfers, including Lyle, who was a candidate for the team captaincy.

But Gallacher said Lyle should forget about what happened in Indonesia because Montgomerie's actions were ruled to be correct.

"Monty's explanation for what happened in the Indonesian Open was accepted by a forthright committee and, at that point, everyone should have put the matter behind them," he said.
