Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 12 (UPI) -- Gary Sheffield drove in three runs, and Brian Schneider and Fernando Tatis hit solo homers Sunday in the New York Mets' 9-7 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
The home runs were the first in eight games for the Mets, who took the last two contests in a three-game series.
Daniel Murphy added two RBI for the Mets.
Mike Pelfrey (7-4) was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs and five hits in seven innings.
Brandon Phillips drove in two runs, and Willie Taveras, Chris Dickerson, Ramon Hernandez and Adam Rosales each had an RBI for the Reds.
Cincinnati starter Aaron Harang (5-9) took the loss, giving up five runs and eight hits in three innings.
