Hoffman replaces Broxton on All-Star team

MILWAUKEE, July 12 (UPI) -- Milwaukee closer Trevor Hoffman will replace injured counterpart Jonathan Broxton of the Los Angeles Dodgers on the National League All-Star roster.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Broxton was told by LA Manager Joe Torre he was being shut down until after the All-Star break because of a toe injury on his right foot.

Hoffman was named his replacement Sunday by Major League Baseball.

"It was a big surprise," Hoffman said on Milwaukee's Web site before a 7-4 loss Sunday to the Dodgers. "It's nice to come in and have that kind of news get dropped on you. It's a big honor to be able to represent the Brewers."

Hoffman, 41, has compiled 20 saves in 22 chances in his first season in Milwaukee despite missing most of April with a rib cage injury.

He had been San Diego's closer for 16 seasons before signing a one-year, $6 million deal with the Brewers and leads baseball with 574 career saves.
