OSTRAVA, Czech Republic, July 10 (UPI) -- Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro won their Davis Cup matches Friday, leaving the Czech Republic and Argentina in a 1-1 quarterfinal tie in Ostrava.
Del Potro gave Argentina a 1-0 advantage by trouncing Ivo Minar 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. Berdych followed with 6-4, 2-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory against Juan Monaco, squaring the best-of-five matchup 1-1 on the red clay at Ostrava's Cez Arena.
"If you are struggling a little bit with the best shot in your game and you don't feel good on the court you have to really try to fight until the last point," Berdych said while discussing his tougher than expected win. "That's what happened today."
Minar subbed for Radek Stepanek, the Czechs' top player, who has been hampered by a knee injury, but will play Saturday.
In Saturday's doubles, del Potro and Leonardo Mayer face Stepanek and Lukas Dlouhy.
