Szavay makes quarterfinals in Hungary

BUDAPEST, Hungary, July 9 (UPI) -- Local favorite Agnes Szavay won a tough three-set match Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the GDF Suez Brand Prix tournament in Hungary.

Szavay, seeded fourth, defeated Tathiana Garbin 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 7-5 in a match that took more than three hours. There were 22 service breaks in the match, including nine in the final set.

Szavay had to overcome 13 double faults in gaining a quarterfinal berth against Timea Bacsinszky, who didn't win a game in the first set but rallied for a 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Patricia Mayer.

Top-seeded Patty Schnyder had an easier time in her second-round match, beating Elena Camerin 6-3, 6-2. She drew fifth-seeded Alisa Kleybanova for Friday's quarterfinals. Kleybanova topped Kateryna Bondarenko 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in nearly three hours.

The other quarterfinals Friday have No. 6-seeded Alona Bondarenko playing Shahar Peer and Petra Martic going against Edina Gallovits.

The tournament continues through Sunday when the champion will collect $37,000.
