Santoro finally reaches second round

NEWPORT, R.I., July 9 (UPI) -- Two-time defending champion Fabrice Santoro finally advanced past the first round Thursday at the rain-marred Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

Santoro defeated Flavio Cipolla 6-3, 7-5 in a match that was suspended during the first set Wednesday.

The first round was completed Thursday, following rain delays both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Seventh-seeded Kevin Kim reached the second round when Sebastien Grosjean retired with a shoulder injury.

Samuel Groth moved on with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Ricardo Mello; eighth-seeded Sergiy Stakhovsky ousted Frank Dancevic 7-6 (11-9), 2-6, 7-5; Olivier Rochus defeated Alexander Peya 6-2, 4-6, 6-4; and Rajeev Ram was a 6-4, 7-5 victor over Alejandro Falla.
