BOSTON, July 9 (UPI) -- David DeJesus put Kansas City in front with a two-run homer in the sixth inning Thursday, lifting the Kansas City Royals to an 8-6 victory over Boston.

The Red Sox lost for the first time in three games and fell back into a tie with the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East.

Boston took a 4-0 lead through three innings and still maintained a 5-3 advantage going into the sixth before the Royals moved in front against the Red Sox bullpen.

Manny Delcarmen replaced starter Brad Penny in the sixth and gave up a leadoff double to Mark Teahen. Two outs later, Teahen was still on second base, but he scored on Alberto Callaspo's double.

Justin Masterson (3-3) relieved Delcarmen and allowed an RBI single to Ryan Freel that tied the game. That brought up DeJesus, who hit an 0-1 pitch over the wall in right for a 7-5 Royals' lead.

Luke Hochevar (5-3) survived six innings to get the win. He allowed five runs on nine hits.

Joakim Soria recorded a four-out save, his 14th of the season.
