POREC, Croatia, July 9 (UPI) -- Ivo Karlovic is being called upon to play both singles and doubles for Croatia against the United States this weekend in a Davis Cup quarterfinal series.
Karlovic is to open the best-of-five set Friday against James Blake before teaming with Lovro Zovko for a doubles match Saturday and then a singles bout with Mardy Fish on Sunday.
The matches are to be played in Porec on an indoor clay court, on which the U.S. players traditionally have problems.
The United States will be without Andy Roddick, who injured a hip in Sunday's Wimbledon five-set final, so Blake will be in the Americans' No. 1 singles spot. Fish, who will play Marin Cilic Friday, was tabbed to fill in for Roddick.
The United States will have its usual doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan, who fell to No. 2 in the world in the latest rankings after a runner-up finish at Wimbledon.
Sunday's singles are scheduled to have Blake playing Cilic in the first match of the day.
The winner in Porec moves on to the Davis Cup semifinals Sept. 18-20 against either Argentina or the Czech Republic.
