SAN JOSE, Calif., July 8 (UPI) -- San Jose right wing Claude Lemieux has retired a second time from the National Hockey League.

In his first NHL action since 2002-03, Lemieux, 43, played in 18 games for the Sharks last season with no goals and one assist.

In 21 seasons, the native of Buckingham, Quebec, accumulated 816 points -- 379 goals, 407 assists -- with 1,777 penalty minutes.

"I want to thank my former teammates from my entire career for all of their support," he said on San Jose's Web site Wednesday. "I feel very fortunate that I was able to have a career like I had. There have been many great NHL players who did not get the opportunities to win that I had."

In 234 career playoff games -- fifth-most all-time -- he played on four Stanley Cup-winning teams: the 1986 Canadiens, 1995 and 2000 Devils, and 1996 Avalanche, and won the Conn Smythe (MVP) Trophy in the Stanley Cup playoffs with New Jersey.
