Tommie Harris' wife dies

DETROIT, July 7 (UPI) -- Placido Polanco had a homer, four RBI and two runs, and Marcus Thames drilled a three-run homer Tuesday in Detroit's 8-5 win over Kansas City.
Justin Verlander (9-4) got the win despite giving up five runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out 11. Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save.
Miguel Cabrera had a solo homer for Detroit.
Bruce Chen (0-3) took the loss after giving up seven runs on four hits with five walks in 4 2/3 innings. Chen hasn't won in the majors since Oct. 2, 2005.
David DeJesus was 3-for-5 with three RBI for Kansas City, which is just 3-5 over its last eight games.
