SAN DIEGO, July 6 (UPI) -- Phil Mickelson's mother, Mary, has been diagnosed with breast cancer, only a month and a half after his wife was diagnosed with the same disease.

The San Diego Union-Tribune disclosed the diagnosis Monday. The newspaper quoted Mickelson's sister saying their mother was diagnosed a week ago and will have surgery Friday at the MD Anderson Cancer Center where Mickelson's wife, Amy, had surgery last Wednesday.

Mickelson suspended his PGA Tour schedule after it was announced May 20 that his wife was diagnosed with the disease. He returned to the Tour for June's St. Jude Classic, and then was runner-up at the U.S. Open.
