DAVIE, Fla., July 2 (UPI) -- Police in Broward County, Fla., say former New York Yankees player Jim Leyritz was arrested Thursday on charges he battered his former wife.

The Broward Sheriff's Office confirmed Leyritz, 45, was arrested in Davie, Fla., after police officers responded to reports of domestic violence at the home the former MLB player shares with his ex-wife, Karrie Leyritz, The Miami Herald said.

Attorney David Bogenschutz, who represents Leyritz, said he had few details regarding the former baseball player's most recent brush with the law.

"I have learned there has been an arrest, but I'm not aware of the facts or circumstances of the arrest at this point,'' Bogenschutz said. "My understanding is at some point he'll be brought before a judge today."

Leyritz, who also played for the Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers during his career, was already facing driving under the influence manslaughter charges from a deadly 2007 accident. A trial on those charges is expected to begin Sept. 14.
