NCAA upholds sanctions on Kelvin Sampson

INDIANAPOLIS, June 30 (UPI) -- NCAA sanctions levied against former Indiana basketball coach Kelvin Sampson were upheld Tuesday.

Sampson had asked an NCAA Committee on Infractions ruling that barred him from coaching an NCAA-member basketball team until 2013 be reconsidered. Sampson claimed the penalty was excessive and said the NCAA made procedural errors while also misinterpreting evidence.

The NCAA, in a release Tuesday, said it found "no basis on which to conclude that the findings of violations were contrary to the evidence," adding that the penalties were not excessive.

The Indiana men's basketball program was placed on three years' probation as part of the sanctions.

Sampson resigned as the Hoosiers' coach Feb. 22, 2008, following allegations he had made impermissible telephone calls to potential recruits. He was under NCAA scrutiny for similar activities while he coached at Oklahoma.

In 25 seasons as a college coach, Sampson built a 498-272 record. He is currently an assistant coach for the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks.
