VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 29 (UPI) -- A Vancouver, Canada, official is calling for an investigation into allegations the city's Olympic Village could become infested with toxic mold.
Councilor Raymond Louie says unwrapped water pipes in the housing development are a prime candidate for creating mildew and mold that could be harmful to the international athletes who will be living there in less than a year.
Canwest News Service reported Monday the concerns were first raised by union construction workers who said the fast pace of construction had left many pipes uninsulated.
"I expect the developer to ensure that the contractors and subcontractors do the job properly," said Louie. "If there have been shortcuts, I would expect them to do a level of inspection."
The $1 billion Olympic Village is the housing site for the 2010 Winter Olympics and is scheduled for completion in October. After the Games, the city-funded project will be converted to condominiums.
