Scott Dixon wins IRL race at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va., June 28 (UPI) -- Scott Dixon equaled an IRL record Saturday by winning the SunTrust Indy Challenge at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway.

It was Dixon's 19th IndyCar victory, tying him with Sam Hornish Jr.

The defending IRL champion capitalized on a pit stop midway through the race, and then beat teammate Dario Franchitti, the pole winner, to the finish line, giving Chip Ganassi Racing a 1-2 finish after they benefited from a late-race caution.

Dixon, Franchitti and Graham Rahal had yet to stop on pit road before Helio Castroneves got too high up the track and scraped the wall along the backstretch, forcing the yellow flag to be displayed with 52 laps remaining.

"Today was about patience," Dixon said after leading the final 161 laps. "We saved more fuel than (Franchitti) and he got caught up on that yellow. That's when we jumped him."

Rahal finished third, Hideki Mutoh fourth and Danica Patrick fifth -- her fifth top-five finish in the last eight races.
