ATLANTA, June 28 (UPI) -- Tommy Hanson limited the Red Sox to two hits in six scoreless innings Sunday and the Atlanta Braves held on for a 2-1 inter-league win over Boston.
Hanson (4-0) had thrown just 97 pitches before being relieved at the start of the top of the seventh inning by Eric O'Flaherty.
He made solo homers by Chipper Jones in the first and Garret Anderson in the fourth stand up by taming Boston's potent lineup.
Closer Mike Gonzalez recorded his ninth save despite giving up a run and two hits in the top of the ninth.
Anderson had two of the six hits for the Braves, who avoided a three-game sweep and snapped their four-game losing streak.
Boston's run scored on Jason Varitek's second hit, a single with two outs in the ninth.
Three others had one hit for the Red Sox, who had won six of seven.
Losing pitcher Brad Penny (6-3) surrendered two earned runs and six hits in six innings.
