PITTSBURGH, June 26 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates have sent struggling right hander Ian Snell to their Triple-A minor league affiliate at Indianapolis at his request.
Snell was just 2-8 with a 5.36 ERA in 15 starts this season.
In 80 2/3 innings, he had walked 44 and struck out 52.
"I left it up to myself," he said on the team's Web site Thursday shortly after throwing a side session at Pittsburgh's PNC Park. "I just made a better decision for myself and for my career and better for my life. I'm just going to go down there, get my thoughts together and do good."
His demotion comes two seasons after he went 9-12 with a career-low 3.76 ERA.
In a start Tuesday against the Cleveland Indians, Snell surrendered four earned runs and four hits in just 2 2/3 innings.
He is 11-27 with a 5.24 ERA since the middle of the 2007 season.
