MILWAUKEE, June 26 (UPI) -- Yovani Gallardo allowed a lone run and struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings Friday, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-1 victory over San Francisco.
Gallardo (8-4) surrendered only four hits and helped bring the Brewers a much-needed victory after they had dropped five of their previous six. San Francisco came into the series having won five of six.
The only run allowed by Gallardo came on Pablo Sandoval's first-inning homer, but the Brewers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Craig Counsell produced a leadoff triple and scored on a double by Ryan Braun. Casey McGehee then put Milwaukee in front for good with an RBI two-base hit.
J.J. Hardy had a solo homer in the third and Braun drove in another run with a single during a two-run fifth.
Matt Cain (9-2) lost his first game in almost two months, giving up five runs on six hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings.
