'Vontae Davis' arrest wasn't Miami rookie

MIAMI, June 24 (UPI) -- Miami Dolphins rookie Vontae Davis says a person arrested this month in Illinois under his name and address isn't him.

A Champaign, Ill., police report indicated that someone with Davis' name and Washington address was arrested June 9 and charged with unnecessary vehicular noise and driving without a valid license. The only problem is Davis says he was in Miami attending Dolphins activities at the time, and team officials back him up, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Wednesday.

Davis told the newspaper he hadn't even been in Champaign since February, saying, "It's a crazy thing. When I heard about it, it hit me: 'Oh, God.' It was something I couldn't prepare for. It just came out of nowhere."

He added his wallet had been stolen in Champaign before he left school to turn pro and theorized someone who looks similar to him was still using his old driver's license as identification.

A report in the student newspaper The Daily Illini made an erroneous assumption in a published report that the person arrested was the football player, a Champaign police spokeswoman said.
