DETROIT, June 24 (UPI) -- Adam Everett's infield single drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth Wednesday and Detroit survived a ninth-inning jam to down the Chicago Cubs 5-3.

Miguel Cabrera and Gerald Laird had solo homers for the Tigers, helping them to their sixth straight victory.

In a 2-2 game, Marcus Thames drew a lead-off walk in the sixth against Rich Harden (4-4) after staying alive when catcher Geovany Soto dropped a foul pop-up. Brandon Inge drew a one-out walk and Magglio Ordonez reached on a single to load the bases.

After Gerald Laird lined out to third base, Everett beat out his infield hit to drive in Thames with the go-ahead run. Curtis Granderson then worked a walk to force in another run.

Zach Miner (5-1) got the win with an inning of relief and Fernando Rodney grabbed his 15th save despite a ninth-inning scare.

Rodney walked Derrek Lee to open the ninth and gave up a single to Micah Hoffpauir. But the next three batters were retired, two on strikeouts, to end the game.
