SEATTLE, June 20 (UPI) -- Rob Johnson finished off a four-run eighth inning with an RBI triple Friday, rallying the Seattle Mariners to a 4-3 inter-league victory over Arizona.
Arizona starter Jon Garland had shut out the Mariners through seven innings on seven hits, but relievers Scott Schoeneweis and Tony Pena combined to lose the lead as well as the game.
Schoeneweis gave up a leadoff homer to Russell Branyan in the eighth and Pena (5-3) immediately was called from the bullpen.
After Adrian Beltre greeted Pena with a single the next two Mariners recorded outs to give the Diamondbacks a chance to escape the inning. However, pinch-hitter Ken Griffey Jr. homered to center to tie it at 3-3, Chris Woodward followed with a single and Johnson's triple drove in Woodward with the eventual winning run.
That made a winner out of Miguel Batista (4-2), who worked the top of the ninth. David Aardsma recorded his 13th save, but not without some brief concern.
Aardsma gave up a two-out single to Eric Byrnes in the ninth and Byrnes to moved to second on a wild pitch. Miguel Montero then struck out to end the game.
Seattle has won 17 one-run games this season, most in the majors.
