NEW YORK, June 17 (UPI) -- Mike MacDougal got Robinson Cano to ground into a game-ending double play Wednesday, preserving Washington's 3-2 win over the New York Yankees.
The Nationals ended a four-game losing streak and won for just the 17th time this season. Every other team in the major leagues has won at least 10 more games than has Washington.
Washington starter John Lannan (4-5) gave up a lone run through eight innings, that coming on Cano's homer in the fifth, and went to the mound in the ninth to protect a 3-1 lead.
Johnny Damon, however, opened the inning with a home run and after Nick Swisher flew out, Mark Teixeira singled.
MacDougal replaced Lannan and he walked Alex Rodriguez after pinch-runner Brett Gardner had stolen second.
With the game on the line, Cano fouled off six pitches from MacDougal before grounding into a double play started by shortstop Cristian Guzman. It was MacDougal's first save since replacing Joel Hanrahan as Washington's closer.
The Nationals scored on a solo homer by Adam Dunn in the fourth and a two-run triple from Nick Johnson in the fifth.
Chien-Ming Wang (0-5) remained winless, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings.
