EASTBOURNE, England, June 17 (UPI) -- No. 1-seed Elena Dementieva lost a third-set tiebreaker Wednesday and was eliminated from the $600,000 Aegon International tournament in England.
Officials scheduled the entire second round for play Wednesday as the grass-court tournament looks to wrap up Saturday, two days before the Wimbledon Championships open.
Dementieva is ranked No. 4 in the world but heads to London having missed the quarterfinals in her last three tournaments.
Dementieva didn't win a game in the first set and was down a break in the third but forced the tiebreaker. Virginie Razzano was able to build an early lead over Dementieva and finish off the 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory.
Sixth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki defeated Samantha Stosur 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 and No. 8-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska and Vera Dushevina advanced when their opponents withdrew because of injury.
Also Wednesday, Marion Bartoli topped Anna Chakvetadze 7-5, 6-3; Anabel Medina Garrigues took out Sybille Bammer 6-1, 7-5; Aleksandra Wozniak stopped Zheng Jie 7-6 (7-3), 6-3; and Ekaterina Makarova got by Amelie Mauresmo 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (15-13).
The quarterfinal schedule Thursday finds Wozniacki going against Makarova, Radwanska versus Razzano, Bartoli playing Medina Garrigues and Dushevina facing Wozniak.
