PITTSBURGH, June 15 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins, led by team owner Mario Lemieux, celebrated their Stanley Cup championship Monday with a parade and rally with thousands of fans.
Pittsburgh won its third championship in franchise history by knocking off the defending champion Red Wings at Detroit in Game 7 Friday. It was the first title for Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
Pittsburgh's other Cups came in 1991 and 1992 when Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr were the team's top players.
The Penguins are only the third team ever to win Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals on the road, and it came after the home team had won the first six games of the series.
