EASTBOURNE, England, June 15 (UPI) -- No. 1-seeded Elena Dementieva, despite some service problems, was a first-round winner Monday at the $600,000 Aegon International tournament in England.
The grass-court tournament is the final tune-up before the Wimbledon Championships, which begin June 22.
Dementieva was a 6-2, 6-2 victor over Maria Kirilenko but took four service breaks and nearly 90 minutes to finish off the match. She didn't suffer a service break but had seven double faults and got in just 53 percent of her first serves.
She advanced to a second-round pairing with Virginie Razzano, who dispatched Alize Cornet 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 on Monday.
Second-seeded Nadia Petrova claimed a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over Ana Ivanovic, while Zheng Lie topped Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-2 and Samantha Stosur took out Sabine Lisicki 6-2, 6-1 in other first-round matches.
