NEW YORK, June 14 (UPI) -- Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress is set for a court appearance on gun charges.
The New York Daily News reported Sunday the case will be delayed because Burress' lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, has been unable to strike a deal with prosecutors.
Brafman said Burress -- who is due for a brief court appearance Monday -- hopes to get the case put off until September. If successful, he might be able to play in the upcoming NFL season.
"We'll be in and out of court in five minutes," Brafman said of Monday's hearing. "There is going to be an adjournment."
Burress was released by the Giants this year, months after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a New York nightclub.
He faces two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, each carrying a mandatory 3 1/2 years in prison. He has pleaded not guilty, and remains free on $100,000 bail.
