Jake Peavy out with ankle injury

ANAHEIM, Calif., June 13 (UPI) -- San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy will miss at least a month because of a tendon strain in his right ankle.

The oft-injured right hander has been bothered by ankle tendinitis since May 22, when he was hurt while running the bases during a 4-0 win over the Chicago Cubs.

The team said on its Web site the damage to the ankle was discovered during an MRI at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, Calif.

He showed up at the clubhouse before Friday's 11-6 loss to the LA Angels in Anaheim wearing a cast.

"I thought I was good enough to be out there (before the MRI)," he told reporters. ""It was no fun to run and cover first base (in subsequent starts)."

Peavy (6-6 in 13 starts) was placed on the 15-day disabled list late Friday and likely won't pitch again until the end of July.

"The key ingredient to getting this thing better is staying off of it," said trainer Todd Hutcheson.
