Roddick slips by Hewitt in London
LONDON, June 11 (UPI) -- Andy Roddick took a pair of tiebreakers Thursday from Lleyton Hewitt and moved into the quarterfinals of the $1 million Aegon Championships in London.
Roddick and Hewitt have won eight of the last nine Aegon titles -- Rafael Nadal won last year -- and played very even Thursday. Neither player managed a service break but Roddick was able to win the tiebreakers in the 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4) victory.
Roddick is paired against ninth-seeded Ivo Karlovic in Friday's quarterfinals. Karlovic used 19 aces in taking out Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 6-4.
Top-seeded Andy Murray didn't face a break point in his 6-4, 6-4 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez while No. 8-seeded Mardy Fish ousted 10th-seeded Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 6-4. Murray and Fish are quarterfinal opponents.
Third-seeded Gilles Simon was upset 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 by No. 14-seeded Mikhail Youzhny, who next meets James Blake. The sixth-seeded Blake defeated Sam Querrey 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Thursday.
The fourth quarterfinal has Steve Darcis playing Juan Carlos Ferrero. Darcis advanced on a walkover when fourth-seeded Gael Monfils withdrew with a wrist injury while Ferrero took out Xavier Malisse 6-4, 7-5 (7-4).
Djokovic advances to Halle quarterfinals
HALLE, Germany, June 11 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Novak Djokovic rallied for a three-set win Thursday in the second-round of the $1 million Gerry Weber Open tennis tournament in Germany.
Djokovic dropped a tight first set before beginning to solve the game of Florent Serra and getting a 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 win. By the third set Djokovic had worn Serra down, was able to pile up three service breaks and advance to the grass-court tournament's quarterfinals.
Djokovic is to go against seventh-seeded Jurgen Melzer in Friday's quarterfinals, Melzer took the first set Thursday 6-1 when Nicolas Kiefer retired due to an abdominal muscle tear. Melzer and Djokovic are the only seeded players remaining in the Gerry Weber field.
In other matches Thursday, Andreas Beck defeated Lukas Lacko 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) and Oliver Rochus took out Philipp Petzschner 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
Beck will meet Philipp Kohlschreiber while Tommy Haas goes against Mischa Zverev and Benjamin Becker plays Rochus in the quarterfinal round.
Beck, Becker, Haas, Kohlschreiber and Zverev are all from the tournament's host country of Germany.
Ralph Willard resigns at Holy Cross
WORCESTER, Mass., June 11 (UPI) -- Holy Cross men's basketball coach Ralph Willard has resigned and will join the staff of Louisville's Rick Pitino.
"I've been pursuing Ralph for the last 10 years," Pitino said in a statement. "I can't tell you how excited we are that he has joined our staff and we are back together again. Ralph is truly one of the best minds in our game."
Willard also was an assistant under Pitino with the New York Knicks (1987-89) and the University of Kentucky (1989-90).
He compiled a 192-117 record in 10 seasons at Holy Cross, guiding the Crusaders to four Patriot League tournament titles and four trips to the NCAA Tournament.
"This is obviously one of the most difficult decisions I've had to make in my career," Willard said Wednesday about leaving Holy Cross. "But after much thought and examination I think it is best for the program going forward and for me personally."
Record soccer deal sends Ronaldo to Madrid
LONDON, June 11 (UPI) -- Cristiano Ronaldo, the star winger for Manchester United, apparently is headed for Real Madrid in a record 80 million pound ($130.7 million) deal.
United owner Alex Ferguson decided to accept the offer, The Times of London reported, and the deal should be completed by the end of the month.
The Ronaldo deal is the second record transaction involving Real in a month. On Monday, the Spanish club agreed to pay AC Milan 56 million pounds ($91.5 million) for Brazilian star Kaka.
Blumenherst wins women's amateur award
BRASELTON, Ga., June 11 (UPI) -- Amanda Blumenherst was selected for the third consecutive year as the winner of the Nancy Lopez Award given to the outstanding female amateur golfer.
Blumenherst, the reigning U.S. Women's Amateur champion, is a three-time national player of the year and led Duke to the NCAA women's golf title in 2006 and 2007. She graduated from Duke recently and turned professional in May.
"Winning the Nancy Lopez Award for the third year in a row is an incredible honor," said Blumenherst. "I am so excited to have accomplished this, especially because Nancy Lopez has been my role model since I started playing golf. To win an award which includes her name and that she believes in so much is an amazing honor and achievement. It is an excellent way to conclude my amateur career."
She won a vote of committee members from the American Junior Golf Association, Georgia State Golf Association and Atlanta Classic Foundation. Previous winners include Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel. The award was first given in 2000.
No player before Blemenherst, who also won in 2007 and 2008, won the Nancy Lopez Award more than once.
