OAKLAND, Calif., June 10 (UPI) -- The Minnesota Twins exploded for nine runs over a three-inning stretch Tuesday to overwhelm Oakland 10-5.
Jason Kubel and Delmon Young both knocked in three runs for the Twins and Justin Morneau went 4-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
The 16-hit performance was plenty for Scott Baker (4-6), who carried a shutout into the ninth inning before giving up three runs on four hits. He struck out eight on the night.
Oakland put five runs on the board in the bottom of the ninth but they were not enough to keep the Athletics' seven-game winning streak going.
Brett Anderson (3-6) took the loss after giving up five runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
The Twins were leading 1-0 when they put up four runs in the sixth. Morneau led off with a home run and Young and Carlos Gomez added back-to-back RBI doubles.
The Twins scored four more in the seventh with Kubel's three-run homer doing most of the damage.
After Minnesota added a run in the eighth to take a 10-0 lead, the Athletics rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it somewhat interesting. The first six Oakland batters reached base against Rajai Davis and Jesse Crain. Adam Kennedy was the first batter to face Crain and drove in two runs with a single.
The uprising forced the Twins to bring in closer Joe Nathan, who had not been expected to pitch but gamely struck out the final two batters for his 12th save.
