Keothavong is among winners in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, England, June 9 (UPI) -- No. 11-seeded Anne Keothavong took a quick straight-set victory Tuesday before rains suspended play at the $220,000 Aegon Classic tournament in England.

Keothavong needed just an hour to dispatch Sofia Arvidsson 6-2, 6-2 in first-round play at the grass-court tuneup for Wimbledon. Keothavong piled up five service breaks in the victory.

No 16-seeded Melinda Czink took out Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-4, 6-3 and 15th-seeded Aravane Rezai was leading Duque Marino 5-4 in the first set when rains caused the day's play to the stopped.

Stefanie Voegele defeated Carly Gullickson 3-6, 6-4, 7-5; Sania Mirza topped Tatiana Poutchek 6-1, 6-2; Petra Cetkovksa beat Stephanie Foretz 7-6 (7-5), 6-3; Julia Goerges stopped Anastasia Rodionova 6-4, 6-2; Mariya Koryttseva was a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 winner over Youlia Fedossova; and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova took out Ayumi Morita 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in Tuesday's other completed matches.
