
HALLE, Germany, June 8 (UPI) -- Fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych fired 10 aces en route to a first-round victory Monday at the $1 million Gerry Weber Open grass-court tournament in Germany.
Berdych backed up his strong serving game with four service breaks in a 6-4, 7-5 win over Jan Hernych in the opening day of the Wimbledon tune-up.
Two other seeded players also won Monday. No. 6-seeded Dmitry Tursunov took out Igor Kunitsyn 7-5, 6-4 and eighth-seeded Rainer Schuettler defeated Marc Gicquel 6-3, 6-4. Tursunov and Schuettler each dropped serve just once in their matches
Tommy Hass beat Stefan Koubek 6-2, 6-2 in 59 minutes in the day's most lopsided match.
Benjamin Becker topped Victor Hanescu 6-4, 6-4 and Florent Serra was a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 winner over Dudi Sela in Monday's other pairings.
Defending champion Roger Federer, fresh off his French Open win, is the top seed in Halle. Federer also won the event each year from 2003-06.
The Gerry Weber Open winner will claim $160,000.
