Spanish team takes women's doubles title

PARIS, June 5 (UPI) -- Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual and Anabel Medina Garrigues dropped just two games Friday in defending their French Open women's doubles title in Paris.

Ruano Pascual and Medina Garrigues, who were seeded third, faced just four break points in a 6-1, 6-1 rout of 12th-seeded Victoria Azarenka and Elena Vesnina.

The winning team controlled the match throughout, winning 65 percent of the points in their own serve and 55 percent when Azarenka or Vesnina served.

It was the sixth French Open doubles titles for Ruano Pascual. In addition to last year's title won with Medina Garrigues, she won event four times with Paola Suarez. She is also a three-time doubles winner at the U.S. Open and once at the Australian Open.

Friday's win marked the first Grand Slam title for Medina Garrigues.

Medina Garrigues and Ruano Pascual will split the winners' purse of $435,000.
