BUFFALO, N.Y., June 5 (UPI) -- Randy Smith, who once held the NBA record for consecutive games played, died Friday of an apparent heart attack, a former teammate said. He was 60.
Durie Burns, who had been a teammate of Smith's at Buffalo State, told The Buffalo News he was informed of Smith's death by Smith's wife, Angela. The newspaper said Smith collapsed while exercising.
Smith had no known prior major medical problems, the newspaper said.
Smith played 12 seasons in the NBA, the majority of which he spent with the Buffalo Braves. He was a seventh-round draft pick out of Buffalo State in 1971.
From 1972 until 1983, Smith played in 906 consecutive games. That stood as the NBA record until it was broken by A.C. Green, who eventually played in 1,192 straight contests.
Smith also played with Cleveland, New York and Atlanta.
