DETROIT, June 3 (UPI) -- Daisuke Matsuzaka notched his first win of the season Tuesday with five solid innings in Boston's 5-1 win over the Detroit Tigers.
Matsuzaka (1-3) held the Tigers to one run on six hits, striking out six and winning for the first time since September. Despite the victory, he has yet to make it through the sixth inning this season.
Jonathan Papelbon struck out three consecutive batters in the ninth with the bases loaded.
Jason Bay's two-run homer keyed the Red Sox attack, although Tiger pitchers chipped in with a walk and a hit batter that forced in runs with the bases loaded in the sixth inning.
Rick Porcello (6-4) took the loss after surrendering three runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Boston scored a run in the top of the first when Dustin Pedroia singled and then came home on a double by J.D. Drew.
After Detroit tied the game in the bottom of the first on Miguel Cabrera's RBI single, Boston took the lead for good on Bay's homer to left in the third.
Boston added a pair of insurance runs in a sloppy sixth inning when Porcello walked Pedroia with the bases loaded. He was lifted for Brandon Lyon who retired the first batter he faced but then plunked Kevin Youkilis to bring the fifth run in from third base.
