
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 31 (UPI) -- Carlos Gomez knocked in the game-winner Sunday with a seventh-inning single, lifting the Minnesota Twins to a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
His only hit snapped a 2-2 tie with one out in the top of the seventh.
Justin Morneau and Brendan Harris also had one RBI and Mike Redmond had two of the eight hits for the Twins, who avoided a three-game sweep.
Winner Nick Blackburn (5-2) surrendered two earned runs and seven hits in six innings.
Closer Joe Nathan, the last of five pitchers, earned his ninth save by fanning two of the three batters he faced in the ninth.
Tampa Bay's runs scored on solo homers by Carlos Pena in the fourth and Matt Joyce in the fifth.
Joyce had two of the eight hits for the Rays, who have lost six of eight.
Losing pitcher Matt Garza (4-4) gave up three earned runs and seven hits in seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts against his former team.
