DETROIT, May 30 (UPI) -- Johan Franzen scored the winning goal in the second period Saturday to help the Detroit Red Wings beat Pittsburgh 3-1 in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Brad Stuart scored Detroit's first goal and Justin Abdelkader also scored for the Red Wings.

Chris Osgood made 31 saves for his 13th win of the playoffs.

Ruslan Fedotenko scored the lone goal for the Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury gave up three goals on 30 shots.

Detroit and the Penguins are battling for the National Hockey League championship for the second straight year. Last year, Detroit beat Pittsburgh in six games.

The Red Wings are trying to become the first club to repeat as champions since they did it in 1997-1998.

Detroit will host Game 2 Sunday.
