ANAHEIM, Calif., May 30 (UPI) -- Jason Vargas turned in another outstanding effort Friday and Seattle gave him enough run support to lift the Mariners past the Los Angeles Angels 5-2.

Vargas (2-0) was called up from the minors in early May and prior to Friday had allowed only three earned runs in 21 innings over three starts and two relief appearances.

He gave up four runs on two hits in 6 1/3 innings against the Angels and evened his career record over parts of four major league seasons at 8-8.

Three Seattle relievers allowed one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings, with David Aardsma collecting his seventh save.

The Mariners took a 3-0 lead in the third on RBI singles from Ichiro Suzuki and Adrian Beltre along with a sacrifice fly from Ken Griffey Jr.

Jose Lopez hit a solo homer for Seattle in the eighth.

John Lackey (1-1) worked 7 1/3 innings in the loss. He allowed five runs on 10 hits.

Juan Rivera hit a solo homer for the Angeles, who fell back to just one game over .500 and find themselves trailing the surprising Texas Rangers by five games in the AL West.
