
PHILADELPHIA, May 30 (UPI) -- Ryan Howard homered twice and drove in five runs Saturday to boost the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-6 win over Washington.
Howard hit a second-inning solo shot and launched a tape-measure grand slam into the upper deck in right field in the third.
Jimmy Rollins had two hits and one RBI. Winning pitcher Cole Hamels knocked in a run and two scored when Anderson Hernandez booted Howard's sixth-inning grounder.
Shane Victorino had two hits for the Phillies, who have won three of four.
Hamels (3-2) yielded six earned runs and eight hits, but struck out seven batters in six innings.
Closer Brad Lidge earned his 11th save.
Washington's Ronnie Belliard hit a two-run sixth-inning pinch homer. Will Nieves had two RBI, while Hernandez and Alberto Gonzalez had two hits and one RBI apiece for the Nationals, who have lost nine of 11.
Losing pitcher Shairon Martis (5-1), the victim of Howard's power surge, gave up seven earned runs and seven hits in four innings.
