PHOENIX, May 28 (UPI) -- Adrian Gonzalez hit his 18th homer of the year in the first inning Wednesday, starting San Diego on its way to an 8-5 win over Arizona.

Gonzalez did not start Tuesday's game because of flu-like symptoms, although he did come on as a pinch-hitter late in the contest.

That game turned out to be the Padres' first loss in 11 contests, but they bounced back Wednesday, thanks in part to the two-run homer from Gonzales in the opening inning.

Gonzalez added an RBI single during a three-run sixth and the Padres broke things open with a three-run eighth that featured a bases-loaded walk to Chase Headley and an RBI base hit from Henry Blanco.

Jake Peavy (5-5) got the win by surviving 6 1/3 innings. He gave up four runs on eight hits and struck out five.

After Arizona's Gerardo Parra tripled in a run with two away in the ninth, Heath Bell was called on to record the final out and grab his 14th save.

The loss went to Billy Buckner (1-1), who made his second start after working as a reliever for the past two seasons. He allowed five runs on seven hits over five innings.
