PARIS, May 28 (UPI) -- Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and the American Williams sisters were among Thursday's women's winners at the French Open tennis tournament in Paris.
Jankovic, the fifth seed and a semifinalist each of the last two years, was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova.
Venus Willams, the third seed, seven-time major champion and reigning Wimbledon champion, downed Czech Lucie Safarova 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 7-5 in a second-round match that was suspended Wednesday by darkness.
Second-seeded Serena Williams, a 10-time major tournament champion, was an easy 6-2, 6-0 winner over Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual.
Also, fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia dropped the first set 2-6 against Serbia's Jelena Dokic but was leading 4-3 in the second when Dokic retired due to a lower back injury; seventh-seeded and former French Open finalist Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia trounced Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva 6-0, 6-2; and 10th-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark recorded a 6-1, 6-4 victory over American Jill Craybas.
