Barcelona takes Champions League title

ROME, May 28 (UPI) -- Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi each scored a goal, driving Barcelona to a 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the Champions League final in Rome.

It was Barcelona's second Champions League title in four years and came as Manchester United's 25-game league unbeaten streak was snapped. Barcelona is the first team to win the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey and Champions League in the same year.

Manchester United often controlled play in Wednesday's game but was unable to solve Barcelona goaltender Victor Valdes. Perhaps Manchester United's the best chance came two minutes into the game when Valdes muffed a free kick by Ronaldo, but Barcelona defender Gerard Pique was able to turn aside the rebound shot by Park Ji-sung.

About eight minutes later, Eto'o made a series of nice moves with the ball to elude defender Michael Carrick and get open near the goal. He tried a shot from 5 yards out and Manchester goaltender Edwin van des Sar only got a piece of the ball before it reached the net.

Messi's goal in the 70th minute was his ninth of the tournament. Xavi sent a crossing pass to Messi, who was able to head the ball toward the right post for the clinching score.
