MEMPHIS, May 27 (UPI) -- The Commercial Appeal reported Wednesday the NCAA has accused the Memphis basketball program of major violations.
The Memphis newspaper said that during the 2007-08 season, the school was involved in "knowing fraudulence or misconduct," concerning an SAT exam taken by a player.
The newspaper quoted the NCAA's report to Memphis as saying the player in question suited up only for the 2007-08 season. If that is the case, the evidence may point to Derrick Rose, the top overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft.
Memphis won a NCAA-record 38 games that season and appeared in the Final Four. The Tigers lost in the championship game to Kansas.
The Commercial Appeal said the school received notification of the allegations Jan. 16 and representatives from the school will appear before the NCAA Committee on Infractions June 6.
John Calipari left the head coaching position Memphis this year to take over the University of Kentucky basketball program.
