PARIS, May 27 (UPI) -- Highly ranked Rafael Nadal of Spain and Scotland's Andy Murray led Wednesday's men's winners at the French Open tennis tournament in Paris.
Nadal, the grand slam's four-time defending champion and the top seed, drilled Russia's Teimuraz Gabashvili, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, to improve to tournament record 30-0 lifetime on the red clay surface at Roland Garros.
"I'm happy for the record, but in the end happy for the result," World No. 1 Nadal told reporters.
Murray, the No. 3 seed, beat unseeded Potito Starace of Italy, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
He rallied back from a 1-5 third-set deficit.
Other winners on Wednesday were Frenchman Gilles Simon, the seventh seed; eighth-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain; No. 12 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile; 13th-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia and 14th-seeded David Ferrer of Spain.
In the match of the day, Frenchman Josselin Ouanna downed Russia's Marat Safin, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 3-6, 10-8, in 4 hours, 34 minutes.
