DETROIT, May 27 (UPI) -- Darren Helm scored 3:58 into overtime Wednesday, giving Detroit a 2-1 win over Chicago and putting the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals.
For the second straight year, Detroit will be taking on the Pittsburgh Penguins for the NHL title. It will be the first time since 1977-78 that the same two teams have played for the Stanley Cup twice in a row.
Detroit concluded the Western Conference finals in five games, one night after Pittsburgh completed an Eastern Conference sweep of the Carolina Hurricanes.
After two scoreless periods, Daniel Cleary gave Detroit the lead 6:08 into the third with his seventh playoff goal.
Patrick Kane kept Chicago's hopes alive with a backhander that got past Chris Osgood with 7:07 to go in regulation.
The game-winner came when Helm tipped in a shot by Tomas Holstrom.
Osgood made 30 saves while winning his 12th playoff game this year and the 71st of his career. Cristobal Huet stopped 40 of 42 shots.
Detroit will be going after its second straight Stanley Cup and its fifth in 12 seasons. The Red Wings improved their home playoff record this year to 8-1.
