PHOENIX, May 27 (UPI) -- The San Diego Padres' 10-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday when they fell 6-5 to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The surging Padres made a bid for 11 consecutive wins by scoring four runs in the eighth and another in the ninth before Chris Young ran down a long fly ball off the bat of Kevin Kouzmanoff at the warning track in left-center to end the game with the tying run in scoring position.
Max Scherez (2-3) struck out 10 as he shut out the Padres over seven innings while the Diamondbacks built a 6-0 advantage. He ran into trouble in the eighth, however, giving up a solo home run to Chris Burke and a pinch single to Tony Gwynn Jr. before being relieved by Doug Slaten.
Scherzer had a pair of hits and Ryan Roberts went 3-for-4 for Arizona.
The Diamondbacks touched Kevin Correia (1-3) for two runs in the fifth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Scherzer and Gerardo Pena. They added four runs in the sixth on four hits, including a two-run home run by Mark Reynolds.
