MLB: N.Y. Mets 5, Washington 2

NEW YORK, May 25 (UPI) -- Gary Sheffield hit a three-run homer Monday to power the New York Mets to a 5-2 victory over the Washington Nationals.

John Maine (4-3) gave up one run on four hits and three walks in six innings for the Mets. Francisco Rodriguez, who suffered from back spasms during the weekend, had the tying run at the plate in the ninth but escaped with his 13th save of the season.

Carlos Beltran was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for New York.

Losing pitcher John Lannan (2-4) gave up five runs on eight hits and four walks while working into the sixth inning. Wil Nieves had two hits and an RBI for the Nationals.
