KANSAS CITY , Mo., May 25 (UPI) -- Justin Verlander pitched seven scoreless innings Monday in the Detroit Tigers' 13-1 thrashing of the Kansas City Royals.
Verlander (5-2), gaining his fifth win in his last six starts, allowed five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts for the Tigers, who have won eight of their last 10 games.
Miguel Cabrera had four hits and drove in three runs while scoring twice, and Brandon Inge had three hits, two runs and two RBI for Detroit.
David DeJesus drove in the Royals' only run.
Losing pitcher Gil Meche (2-5) gave up four runs on six hits with three walks in 2 1/3 innings for the Royals, who have lost five of their last six games.
